Heartland Season 5: The Best Yet

By Emily Penn

The fifth season of CBC’s hit TV show Heartland was another great year of the family drama we love so much. Set in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, the latest season features the further adventures of our favourite characters and horses at the bustlingly busy Heartland Ranch.

In Season Five, main character Amy Fleming continues to work with physically and emotionally damaged horses, including an ex-racehorse, drawing on techniques from a variety of disciplines. New opportunities are presented and her work with a horse theatre production, a show similar to Cavalia, leads her to make a difficult career-related decision. Amy’s relationship with boyfriend Ty is as complicated as ever, but shared experiences bring the couple closer together.

This season introduced some new characters, but without losing the familiar, beloved ones. Mallary is up to her usual mischief and as she gets older she looks to Amy for boy advice. Stable hand Caleb struggles to deal with his separation from his wife, Ashley, but finds plenty of trouble to keep him busy. And Lou and Peter discover the trials and tribulations of parenthood, while Jack remains the ever constant rock of the family.

The boxed Season Five DVD Set includes special features providing insight into the filming, cast (two and four-legged!), and crew of Heartland, and will be released on September 18, 2012, just days before Heartland’s Season Six premieres on September 23.
